The Key Lime View: How To Increase Attendance At Town Centre Events

Events have become one of the most powerful tools available to town centres, BIDs and destinations. Whether it's an artisan market, community celebration, trail, festival, parade or seasonal event, the right activity can help drive footfall, support businesses and create positive experiences for visitors.

However, one challenge remains consistent. How do you actually get people to attend? After all, even the best event can struggle if people don't know about it, don't understand why they should visit or simply choose to spend their time elsewhere. After delivering and promoting events across town centres, shopping centres, leisure destinations and business parks, we've found that attendance often comes down to a few key factors.

Start Promoting Earlier Than You Think

One of the most common mistakes we see is leaving promotion too late.

Many destinations begin actively promoting an event a week before it takes place.

The problem is that most people have already made plans. Successful events often have a campaign running for several weeks beforehand, building awareness and excitement over time. This could include:

  • Social media content

  • Email marketing

  • PR coverage

  • Local listings

  • Posters and signage

  • Competitions and giveaways

The event itself shouldn't be the start of the campaign. It should be the result of it.

Give People A Reason To Attend

"We've got an event happening." Unfortunately, that's not always enough. Visitors need to understand why it's worth their time.

Ask yourself:

What makes this event different?

What experience will visitors have?

What can they see, do or take part in?

People are much more likely to attend when they can clearly see the benefit.

Involve The Community

Some of the most successful events aren't simply attended by the community. They're created with the community. Schools, charities, community groups, performers, sports clubs and local organisations can all help increase awareness and encourage attendance. When people feel involved, they naturally become advocates for the event.

Create Shareable Moments

People love sharing experiences. Whether it's a giant installation, character appearance, trail, live entertainment, themed display or photo opportunity, creating moments people want to photograph and share can significantly increase visibility. Every photo shared on social media becomes free promotion for the event and destination

.

Don't Forget Your Businesses

Businesses can be one of your biggest promotional assets. Make it easy for them to get involved. Provide social media assets, posters and information they can share with their own customers. The more businesses promoting the event, the wider the reach becomes.

Measure What Worked

After the event, take time to review the results.

Attendance is important, but so are:

  • Social media reach

  • Competition entries

  • PR coverage

  • Business participation

  • Visitor feedback

Understanding what worked well will help shape future events and improve results over time.

Events Are About More Than Attendance

While visitor numbers matter, successful events often achieve much more. They help create positive memories, support businesses, generate community pride and encourage people to return in the future. The strongest events aren't always the biggest. They're the ones that connect with their audience and give people a reason to visit.
